Get it here first! Chairman's Report, Minutes, News and Commentary, etc. Index to previous, plus January, 2006 AKC Judging Application Criteria favors handlers over breeders? Some say it seems to but Mr. Gaeta, Director Of Judging Ops says it does not and is willing to go on the record in an upcoming interview. AKC History and Future, March is Election-time. This reminder from pre-election Spring 2005 is a refresher course on what we’re all about, where we were in 1884 and where we are with today’s AKC Board. Why UKC? dateline Jan 2006 UKC is at a point of great opportunity. There is a growing sense that AKC, the current leader in shows and registrations, is selling out the true breed fancier in the cause of increased profits and political correctness. The one complaint the people have about switching from AKC to UKC is the lack of UKC shows. This is particularly true where there are not large numbers of UKC clubs. One simple rule change could make all the difference. If UKC were to drop the rule that only clubs could hold shows and allow individuals to hold shows, with paid help or volunteers, the balance could change overnight. Many of the largest, longest running, and most successful dog shows in
the AKC world were formerly individually owned clubs. Golden Gate was
one, owned by Stan Hanson and run by Babe Behrendt for many years,
International KC was another, and Morris and Essex was another. All of
these have now been taken over by clubs but individuals could hold the
great majority of shows just as well. Most of us in the dog show world
are well aware that in any club there are three or four members that do
all the work. Rather than using club members to park cars, sell
catalogs, and steward, paid labor could do this menial work. Computers
have made entry taking easy, it can be done by anyone with an elemental
knowledge of computers. Many specialty shows are basically run by one
person even though it is called the Whiffle Hound Club of Northern
Alaska. AKC Branding Success dateline Jan 2006 4Kids Entertainment - the licensing and marketing agent behind such powerhouse properties as Yu-Gi-Oh!(R) and Cabbage Patch Kids(R) - will continue serving as the AKC's exclusive worldwide licensing agent for the AKC's extensive collection of imagery and trademarks in all merchandise categories. Since joining forces in 2003, 4Kids Entertainment and the American Kennel Club have been at the forefront of the burgeoning pet product industry thanks to their comprehensive focus on building the AKC into a premiere retail dog brand. 4Kids has successfully established the AKC as the "best in breed" in pet products by brokering multi-year deals with such industry leaders as JAKKS Pacific (toys and treats), renowned designer Barry Kieselstein-Cord (luxury dog accessories and jewelry), Oster Professional Products (dog grooming), Sherpa's Pet Trading Company (dog carriers) and Flexi-Mat (dog beds). This renewed partnership will enable 4Kids and the AKC to continue participating in the pet industry boom with plans to expand the AKC brand into such categories as pet cleaning products, pet safety products and collectible art work. "Our organization has long prided itself on providing the true gold standard in dog care," added Gail Miller, Director of Brand Development of the American Kennel Club. "That's why we are pleased to extend our agreement with 4Kids Entertainment, a leading force in children's and family licensing and entertainment. Given the ever-growing pet product industry, our unique relationship with 4Kids creates more opportunities to provide dog lovers worldwide with quality products as well as promote public awareness and appreciation of the wonderful world of purebred dogs." Serious threats of litigation are usually but not always, detrimental to the sport. Legal issues open our eyes to problems and how to prevent or resolve them.
